February 27, 2018 – The Somerville Housing Authority (SHA) transformed this long-vacant historic waterworks building into affordable apartments, creating 25 one-bedroom units for elderly and non-elderly disabled citizens. Originally constructed in 1864 as the city’s first water supply pumping station, the building sat vacant for a dozen years before being acquired by the SHA in 2011 and the extensive process of redevelopment began. The facility was ready for occupancy at the end of December and became fully occupied by late February.
Designed by DiMella Shaffer and restored to its historic splendor by general contractor Colantonio, Universal Window and Door supplied 38 historically accurate windows from its 400 Series for the project. The vertically-mulled double hung windows are designed with an arched fixed transom and come with operable push up internal screens. Arched aluminum panning replicates the historic wood casing, with the large windows spanning the two floors of the building.
Waterworks features one-bedroom units, with designated common spaces including a lounge and other communal areas. Special attention was paid to not only historic features but sustainable features in order to minimize the long-term energy expenses for the building.
