North Bennet Street School, Boston, MA

August 11th, 2014 – The Boston Preservation Alliance has named the North Bennet Street School as one of the winners of a 2014 Boston Preservation Alliance Preservation Achievement Award, which honors outstanding achievements in historic preservation. The former City of Boston Printing Building on Richmond Street and the former Boston Police station at 150 North St. were adapted to create the 65,000 square foot private vocational school which trains craftsmen in trades such as cabinet and furniture making and preservation carpentry. Universal Window and Door provided its Fixed 550 Series windows to complete the restoration of the Georgian-revival style brick buildings, typical of Boston municipal buildings in the 20th century.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the Boston Preservation Alliance as part of the team that restored these beautiful historic buildings to serve such a meaningful and practical purpose, given their mission of training individuals for specialty building trades” said Charlotte Broussard, owner of Universal Window and Door.

The North Bennet Street School will be one of ten projects honored by the Boston Preservation Alliance at their 26th annual Preservation Achievement Awards on October 21st at Faneuil Hall. The event will honor outstanding achievements in historic preservation and compatible new construction in Boston.

“The new North Bennet Street School stands as a superb example of creative thinking that saves historic fabric in an environmentally and socially rewarding success story,” said Greg Galer, Executive Director of the Boston Preservation Alliance. “And, as a bonus, the work that now occurs here supports the historic resources and arts of our region.”
