May 15, 2016 – The Lofts at 30 Pine was named the sole recipient of the Preservation Massachusetts Mayor Thomas M. Menino Legacy Award at the 2016 Preservation Massachusetts’ Annual Awards Dinner held recently at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston. Designed by The Architectural Team (TAT) and developed by owner E.A. Fish, the former Heywood-Wakefield furniture factory was converted to 55 contemporary apartment homes, all of which have been designated as affordable.
Universal Window and Door provided over 300 Series 400 Double-Hung, with some being Series 400 Fixed windows, for the project, which meet the exacting standards of the National Park Service. The Lofts at 30 Pine is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the NPS.
Created in 2015, The Mayor Thomas M. Menino Award is given to preservation projects “that are transformative, catalytic, embrace the community, create partnerships, and revitalize the best of the past to make something good for the future.”
According to The Massachusetts Housing Partnership (MHP), The Lofts at 30 Pine is the fourth phase of a 35-year effort to transform one of the largest furniture factories in the world from vacant buildings into housing in downtown Gardner. Universal Window and Door provided the windows for previous projects as well. This final phase consists of 12 one-, 36 two- and 7 three-bedroom apartments. All told, the Heywood-Wakefield urban renewal effort has resulted in 401 mixed-income apartments for families, 78 assisted living units and 48,000 square feet of commercial space.
